"I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world".
Einstein
I enjoy the atmosphere of artistic freedom and look forward to being surrounded by the stimulation of other committed students with innovative ideas.
I derive immense satisfaction from theatre, both as audience and through personal involvement, particularly directing. I directed Lear by Edward Bond for A level and achieved full marks. I found directing demanding and extremely fulfilling. Drama for me is both a vehicle for personal expression and an opportunity for social and political comment. I intend to use creative drama as a therapeutic vehicle for working with young people to explore conflict and tension through freeform role play. I am currently doing a foundation course at Chelsea School of Art as I feel that a better understanding of the visual and spatial arts will enhance my ability to communicate through drama, and see in a more multi dimensional way.
As School Arts Captain, I supervised younger students in creative work, both art and drama. This has taught me leadership and the ability to help and influence others.
I worked with the British Youth Council and chaired the Berkhamsted Youth Town Council for eight years. I participated in the 2005 Youth Parliament Competition, winning Best Minister in the Southern heat. I co-led the Youth Vision for Dacorum Borough Council, which required public presentations and debates. I chaired the Democracy Day for Dacorum, and won through to the finals of the Deutsche Bank Spotlight Awards. Last year I was one of fifteen students from Hertfordshire Sixth forms chosen for a production of Ghetto at the Watford Palace Theatre; an unforgettable life enhancing and learning experience.
I take every opportunity to enjoy art exhibitions and the theatre. I am convinced that art and drama enhance and give a wider dimension to our lives. My long-term objective is to work in therapy-based art and drama with young people. "The language of the body is the key that can unlock the soul" Stanislavski.
A picture is not a mirror which reflects what I lived through in making it, but a powerful and highly expressive object which is as new to me as anyone else.
