On the following pages you will find my concept for a Town Square in the centre of Berkhamsted. These drawings are NOT plans—they are ideas intended to motivate and inspire you, to act as a catalyst for more ideas. Think of them as a starting point for a project which could benefit the town and citizens to a very considerable extent, a concept available for improvement and development. We cannot just leave it and see what commercial developers come up with. Working on this, or a similar project could well be the best way to ensure that this potential development is COMMUNITY rather than developer led.
In the centre of Berkhamsted there are a number of unresolved sites which could make a contribution towards the regeneration of the centre. These sites comprise the following: a. The Kingfisher site, which was previously occupied by Waitrose, partially occupied by Sketchley and previously by Woolworth, and presently partly occupied by a hairdresser, health club, bookshop with coffee shop and a separate coffee chop. A very small part of it is still owned by Waitrose, but most is in the ownership of Kingfisher. b. The current parking area at the rear of the proposed Town Square site owned by the County Council. c. The site presently occupied by Tesco. View from the High Street, the Kingfisher site, with a small Waitrose ownership. View from the rear of the old Waitrose building (The Kingfisher site} |
